Privacy Policy

What we collect, why, who we share it with and how to use your rights.

Last updated

This policy explains what personal information FishTripFinder collects, why, who we share it with and the choices you have. We’ve tried to keep it short and specific to how this site actually works.

Who we are

FishTripFinder (fishtripfinder.com) is operated by FishTripFinder (“FishTripFinder”, “we”, “us”). We are the controller of the personal information described here. Questions or requests: [email protected].

The short version

  • You can browse and search without an account. We don’t use advertising or analytics trackers.
  • Your saved charters and your “near me” location stay in your browser — we don’t store them.
  • If you create an account, write a review or claim a listing, we keep what you give us to run those features.
  • Claim documents are visible only to our team and are deleted as soon as we decide the claim.
  • We don’t sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising.
  • You can ask us to see, correct or delete your information at any time.

What we collect and why

When you browse

Like every website, our servers and our security/CDN provider (Cloudflare) receive technical information with each request: IP address, browser and device type, the page requested, the referring page and the time. We use it to deliver the site, keep it secure and fix problems. These logs are kept for a short time and are not used to build profiles.

Searching and “near me”

If you use “near me”, your browser asks your permission to share your location. We round it to about 1 km, keep it in your browser for the current session only and send it with your search so we can show the closest charters. We don’t save it to your account or a database. You can say no and search by town instead.

Saved charters

Charters you save with the heart button are stored in your own browser (local storage). They never reach our servers, and clearing your browser data removes them.

Accounts

When you create an account we collect your first and last name, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash), account type (angler or captain) and, if you add them, your phone number and profile photo. We use these to run your account, sign you in, send account emails (like password resets) and show your name where you choose to be public (for example on reviews). We also keep the last few IP addresses your account signed in from, to stop fake reviews (for example a captain reviewing their own boat).

Reviews

When you write a review we collect your rating, review text, trip details, any photos you add, your name and email address, plus your IP address and browser type. Reviews are public and show your first name and last initial; your email is never shown. If you review without an account, we email you a link to confirm the review before it’s published. We use IP address and browser to detect spam and fake reviews, and may hold a review for a person to check.

Captains and listings

Listing content — business name, description, photos, trips and prices, departure location, booking links and contact details — is public. Your phone number is only shown on your listing if you choose to show it. We also count how many times visitors click your booking links so we can show you totals in your dashboard; these counts don’t identify visitors.

Claiming a listing

To check that you really run a business, we may email a code to the business’s listed email address, look for a code on the business’s website, or ask you to upload proof (for example a captain’s license, boat registration or business document). Uploaded proof is stored privately, is visible only to our team, and is deleted as soon as we approve or reject the claim. We keep a short record of the decision.

Business information we publish

Many listings start from public sources: Overture Maps Foundation and OpenStreetMap data and the businesses’ own websites. This is business information — name, address, phone, email and website — but for small operators it can include a person’s name. We publish it so anglers can find and compare charters, which we consider a legitimate interest. Owners can claim and correct their listing, or ask us to remove it by emailing [email protected].

Emails we send

We send emails you need — verification codes, review confirmations, account and listing notices — through our email provider (Brevo). If you sign up for our newsletter, we only add you after you confirm by clicking the link in our confirmation email, and every newsletter has an unsubscribe link. We may also email the public address of a charter business once or a few times to invite the owner to claim their listing; you can tell us to stop at any time and we will. We keep basic email delivery logs (recipient, subject, time, delivery status) for up to 30 days to troubleshoot delivery.

When you contact us

If you email us, we keep the conversation so we can help and refer back to it.

  • Contract — running your account, publishing your reviews and listings.
  • Legitimate interests — keeping the site secure, preventing fake reviews and fraud, publishing public business information, inviting businesses to claim their listing, and improving the service. You can object at any time.
  • Consent — your location for “near me” and our newsletter. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legal obligation — when we must keep or disclose information by law.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers who process information for us under contract:

  • Hosting — the servers that run the site and store its database.
  • Cloudflare — delivers the site quickly and protects it from attacks.
  • Brevo — sends our emails and manages the newsletter list.
  • Google Maps — maps on our pages are loaded from Google. When a map loads, Google receives your IP address and browser information and may set its own cookies, under Google’s Privacy Policy.
  • Smartlead — sends our invitation emails to charter businesses.

When you click a booking link you leave FishTripFinder for the captain’s website or a booking platform. What you do there is covered by their own privacy policy. Some links may carry an affiliate reference so the platform can credit us (see our Affiliate Disclosure), but we don’t pass them your personal information.

We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our rights, or as part of a sale or reorganisation of our business (with the same protections).

We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

International transfers

Our providers may process information in the United States, the European Union and other countries. Where information about EU/UK residents leaves the EEA/UK, we rely on adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep it

  • Account information — while your account is open, and deleted when you ask us to close it.
  • Reviews — while they’re published. If you close your account we delete your reviews or, if you prefer, keep them with your name removed.
  • Claim proof documents — deleted as soon as the claim is decided.
  • Unconfirmed guest reviews and newsletter sign-ups — deleted automatically if not confirmed.
  • Email delivery logs — up to 30 days.
  • Server and security logs — a short period, typically days to a few weeks.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK, California and other US states), you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
  • correct it;
  • delete it, including closing your account;
  • stop or limit using it, or object to how we use it;
  • withdraw consent you’ve given.

Email [email protected] from the address on your account (or tell us how to verify you). We’ll reply within 30 days and won’t treat you differently for using your rights. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Cookies

We only use cookies and browser storage that the site needs to work — no advertising or analytics cookies. Details are in our Cookie Policy.

Children

FishTripFinder is not directed at children under 16, and you must be 18 or older to create an account. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS, passwords are hashed, claim documents are stored outside the public website, and access to admin tools is limited to our team. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a unique password for your account.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle personal information, we’ll update this page and the “Last updated” date. For significant changes we’ll tell account holders by email.
